Claiming his steed feared hardship, he saved face.

入門策馬不誇能
敗師誰肯甘從後
託謂鳴驄畏苦辛
Interpretation
During a battle between Lu and Qi, the Lu army was defeated. Meng Zhifan was the last to retreat, a position of honor. Upon entering the city gates, he whipped his horse saying, 'I dared not lag behind—my horse wouldn't advance.' This humility in not boasting about his merit earned Confucius' praise. Those who draw this sign should practice humility and yield to others, avoiding arguments. Though circumstances seem unfavorable, good fortune will emerge from restraint.
