Stick #63

Yan Hui Upholds the Way

Good

Poem

A humble lane, simple meals bring no despair,

While others fret seeing his state so bare.

Unknown to them, in Dao he finds delight,

His sagehood's fragrance lasts beyond all night.

陋巷簞瓢不足愁

傍人見此甚為憂

不知樂道忘貧之

亞聖芳名萬古留

Interpretation

This sign tells of Yan Hui, who lived in poverty with just a basket of rice and gourd of water in a shabby alley. While others pitied him, he found joy in spiritual cultivation, ultimately achieving sagehood and eternal fame. Those who draw this sign should endure hardships patiently, avoid greed for wealth, and focus on virtuous deeds. Poverty is no obstacle—perseverance brings lasting honor. This is an auspicious sign with no misfortune.
