Stick #65
Emperor Chen's Downfall
CautionPoem
War raged when Sui crushed Chen's reign,
Bewitched by charms, the king turned blind.
Nowhere to hide, no rest to gain,
In rouge-stained well, fair ones confined.
隋滅陳時戰伐紛
都因妖媚閉明君
陳奔西赴無藏息
井裡胭脂隱玉人
Interpretation
Emperor Chen was utterly bewitched by his concubines Lady Zhang and Lady Kong, leading to his downfall. When Emperor Wen of Sui attacked, Chen fled but found no refuge, eventually hiding with his concubines in a palace well stained with rouge. Captured and paraded, his kingdom fell. This ominous sign warns: exercise extreme caution, resist corrupting influences, perform good deeds to avert disaster. Beware of manipulators and gossip—especially from women—lest you share Chen's fate.
