At Mawei Slope her spirit took its flight,
Leaving the emperor's endless grief and despair.

馬嵬山下魂飛去
至今明皇長恨情
Interpretation
Emperor Xuanzong doted solely on Consort Yang, neglecting all other palace beauties. When An Lushan rebelled and the imperial army reached Mawei Slope, the mutinous troops demanded her execution. Her death there left the emperor with eternal regret. This inauspicious sign warns the seeker to act cautiously, guard against gossip, and reform one's ways through virtuous deeds to dispel misfortune.
