Stick #14
Tao Yuanming's Drunken Repose
FairPoem
For love of quiet, bamboos grow in rows
Thatched hut shelters wine and rain's repose
Drunk, I nap where apricot blossoms sway
Startled by orioles - sweet dreams betray
為愛幽閒多種竹
買春賞雨在茅屋
醉時臥倒杏花邊
怕聽鶯兒驚夢熟
Interpretation
Planting bamboo groves, drinking while enjoying the rain - these scenes of peace hold hidden warnings. Even in contentment, guard against gossip and keep good intentions. The word 'startled' reminds us to stay cautious for good fortune. Small disturbances need not disrupt true happiness when one remains virtuous.
