Stick #79
Su Qin's Ministerial Appointment
FairPoem
Wealth and rank fade like spring dreams at dawn,
Why strain and struggle from dusk till morn?
Let others hold court with scepter high,
Death leaves but earth beneath the sky.
富貴有如春夢熟
世人何苦力爭求
任他秉笏當朝立
到死惟留土一坏
Interpretation
Riches and honor vanish like spring dreams upon waking. Why do people toil so desperately for them? Even if one becomes prime minister wielding the ivory tablet, death leaves nothing but a mound of earth. This bleak vision advises contentment - crave not what cannot last. Instead, accumulate virtuous deeds to leave an enduring name, lest you too become mere dust. This sign offers no cause for joy, though no grave danger either.
