Stick #35
Tang Monk's Journey for Scriptures
GoodPoem
Heaven appoints this man for great decree,
His flesh must first know toil and poverty.
Don't think fair scenes come easily to view -
Wealth springs from causes planted long ago.
天將降任此其人
筋骨先勞苦彼身
莫謂景佳來可易
貧窮富貴有前因
Interpretation
When Heaven assigns someone a great mission, it first tests them through hardship and poverty. Do not assume wealth and success come easily - all fortunes have karmic roots from past lives. Those who draw this sign must cultivate virtue and embrace labor without complaint, for rewards will surely follow. While the sign promises favorable outcomes ('fair scenes'), one must first endure trials. Without virtuous conduct, prosperity will not come. This is a sign of initial difficulty leading to eventual ease. Beware of gossip and slander from petty people.
